Making the financial district an "edible district"
Rooftop farm garden in Kabuto-cho
“Edible KAYABAEN” is a project started to turn Nihonbashi Kabutocho and Kayabacho, the financial district, into an “edible town. The project proposes a “garden and kitchen for learning together,” and contributes to the creation of a healthy and safe town by nurturing children’s zest for life with “eating” at the core of their learning.
The farm garden, located on the roof of the Tokyo Shoken Building, also promotes diversity and recycling. The garden staff grows a variety of plants while observing their growth every day. By encouraging and coexisting with insects and other living creatures, Edible KAYABAEN hopes to develop an ecosystem that is unique to Kabutocho.
The “Earth Skhole” is also held here and is a nature school for food and agriculture aimed at engaging children. Rather than teaching children how to grow vegetables, the school uses the garden and kitchen as a field to encourage the children’s curiosity and interest in learning about the natural world through contact with plants and other living creatures with their motto being “growing, eating, and observing”
